Last December Click for St. Nick was able to distribute 125 baskets of Christmas joy and hope to those needing a hand up at this time of the year. We were able to help over 500 people, including adults and children with a basket of food, some kitchen utensils along with a New Testament of the Bible.
Each plastic tub included enough food for about 2 weeks for a family of four. Each basket cost us, buying wholesale, about $40/basket.
Please consider helping us this year as we now start in earnest our campaign of Click for St. Nick to help those needing a hand up in life.
We at SOR Mission make a special attempt to help those who are widows, single moms who are struggling, people fighting sickness or family disaster from a death of the wage earner or sickness or unemployment. Your help goes a long ways in helping these needy families.

Today, Sunday, June 17th is Father’s Day in the USA as well as Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and Great Britain. Here in Honduras it’s celebrated on March 19th which is also Saint Joseph’s Day.
This day owes its beginning to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd (Feb 18, 1882 – March 22, 1978), who in 1909, while living in Spokane, WA, USA. Sonora Smart Dodd tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910.
It’s a day to visit our fathers or to recollect some thoughts and memories about our fathers. Please go to our Today page where I have written an article in more depth about the day and my feelings concerning my earthly father and what I was able to learn from him. By reading today’s post on Today you might just find some encouragement for a better Father’s Day. Blessings to you!

Today was our first day with some serious backhoe work in starting our next house project with a family in need of affordable and adequate housing here in Honduras.
We needed to use a backhoe to get the project started because of the slope of the lot being somewhat excessive. This extra work with the backhoe will add an additional 10% cost to the project. To some of you it doesn’t seem like much but to a family living on a limited budget in Central America its a lot.

Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity, once said that they didn’t give out handouts to families challenged by life’s struggles but rather handup’s. Over the years that stuck with me and that too is our “action statement” of what we do here at SOR Mission. Combining that with our mission statement which is an “action statement” of our purpose, which is to connect human need with God’s resources. Â
This coming week we’ll be putting our actions to work with the building of a house for Eva

Jesus in his sermon on the mount tells us not to worry about this life of ours. What we’ll eat, wear, drive or 
drink. Is it possible to live such a life? His conclusion in Matthew 6:34 is “Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own!
Have you found that there have been days that it would appear to be going ok but yet there’s still this nagging from within that your GPS is not leading you where you really want to end up ?
For many Americans and Canadians, it would appear that spending is one way they attempt to make themselves more secure so they don’t have to worry about tomorrow. However it doesn’t work that way!
Jesus said that he will never leave us or forsake us and therefore wants us to seek first his “kingdom” and living life right and all these “things” that we need will somehow be provided at the proper time.
At SOR Mission we attempt to help those without a well functioning GPS system to see that placing their trust and faith in Jesus Christ their life will begin to make more sense. Seeking first his kingdom to us at SOR Mission means seeking justice and mercy for those without access to credit and those needing a hand up in like. Its our calling and what we do best. Please help us to continue this high calling of treating our neighbor as we too want to be treated.
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.

In reading the Scriptures I see where we’re called to humbly do our acts of helping others without fanfare and announcements about our acts of charity but at the same time we’re called to let our light shine to those around us like our friends and work associates so that they may see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven. Ultimately we want that at SOR Mission our acts of mercy and justice are done so as to give our Heavenly Father the praise and glory.

Many of us have heard that song sung or have thought of this phrase from time to time. You can click here to hear a 1940’s rendition of this well know melody. Maybe as a child you have wished upon a star for something that you wanted or needed. Many of us did.

We send beautiful Poinsettia Greetings from Central America where this native plant flourished long before Christianity and Europeans came to the Western Hemisphere. One Indigenous group, the Aztecs, found it blooming in the tropical highlands of southern Mexico during the very short days of winter and named it “Cuetlaxochitl.†The indigenous peoples of the Isthmus did not consider it as a decorative plant seeing it grew to up to 10 feet tall. But many of these groups used it for other practical purposes such as a dye and its sap as a cure for fever. I too have seen it growing upwards of 3-4 meters in height in Northern Thailand.
This beautiful Poinsettia plant would have remained only a Central American regional plant had not Joel Roberts
Poinsett been appointed as the first United States Ambassador to Mexico by then president James Madison back in the 1820’s.
Mr. Poinsett was a self taught botanist who obviously loved plants and while on assignment as the Ambassador to Mexico he became enchanted by the beautiful red leaves of the Poinsettia plant. Later on he sent some specimens back to the US and hence we now all can enjoy the beauty of this plant around the Christmas season. The poinsettia plant took on the name of Mr. Poinsett who was the one who first introduced it to English speaking North Americans.
As a missionary in Central America I have often wondered how the Poinsettia plant named so in English became known in Spanish as “Pascua de Navidad†In English the word came from paschal, Hebrew meaning The Passover (hence paschal lamb) or Easter.. Over time in Latin America the word “Pascua†became associated in a general sense with most major Catholic holy days including Easter and thus the Poinsettia which only turned red at Christmas became known as the Pascua de la Navidad. Hence today we use the word La Pascua de Navidad for this beautiful plant.

Christmas in Central America is around the corner seeing we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving like you do in the United States and Canada. It’s a favorite time of year for me because I highly value the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ who came to this world so that everyone who believes in Him can have eternal life plus they can have a life here full of value and purpose.
It’s  also a favorite time of year  because I can thank God for all the blessings received in my life throughout the year and I also can thank him for the opportunity that He’s given me to bless those that he’s put in my path this past year. I pray these mothers and children will come to know Him better and that they’ll have a closer walk with Jesus in 2018.
That’s why Christmas is a time to celebrate as we share gifts with those we love as well coming together to share family time and a common meal with those we love. The gifts we give are an example of the great gift that God gave us by sending his son Jesus.
