How we helped a woman in great need.

by SOR Mission on August 9, 2016

Alex & Manuela 8-9-16I first met Manuela and her family about 8 month ago when she opened her home for us to start a Bible Study with 6 ladies who wanted to grow and learn more about the Bible.

Manuela has 7 children and she had twin girls about a month ago with her second husband.  Manuela and her husband are from Nicaragua and they both came here to look for new opportunities and to find a better life for themselves and their children.  Manuela’s husband was fortunate to find a job in Costa Rica and they have been living here since 2009.

We read in Matthew chapter 25:37-39 the so called chest pounding righteous said to Jesus, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?” Read the full passage here.

You can go above to SOR Mission At Work and scroll down to Justice or click here for the full story of Manuela.

Blessings to you for helping our sisters like Manuela.

JusticeThe first step in understanding who we are begins with the word JUSTICE.  The team at Seeds works to plant  seeds of Justice (simply doing what’s right in God’s sight)  and Righteousness (simply doing good for those around us)  for those needing it.  The term righteousness is commonly translated justice in Spanish and thus our mission is also known as Semillas de Justicia” in Latin America.  We  work so that the seeds of the Gospel that we plant will bring about a harvest of righteousness that will result in many others hearing of the good news that we so strongly believe in – the news that Jesus died to give us a new life of purpose and meaning.

Our prayer is that this will continue to flow out of our ministry in Central America.  We invite you to become part ofPrivative Rural Art this team to help us work with our PEACE plan to Central America.  We are now working in three Central American Republics;  Costa Rica,  Nicaragua and Honduras.  Consider putting together a team to come down to join us in ministry and to also renew your faith in our Living God.

What verse from the Bible speaks clearly about our motivation as a mission organization?  Micah 6:8 says, “He has shown us , mere mortals, what’s good and what the Lord require of us.”
“Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly before our God.

What can you do for Missions?

by SOR Mission on August 5, 2016

The theme “Missions” encompasses many things and has many varied facets.  Today there are a lot of people in the church who are focused on mission and what they should be doing to reach out to those who haven’t heard of about Jesus and the forgiveness, grace and loving acceptance that he offers those who come to him.  See Matthew 11:28-29.

Street DogsFor some they realize, that because of family responsibilities, commitments at home, financial debt and many other reasons that they are not able to go and be a cross cultural missionary and to serve in another culture not their own.

Go to our Today page and read about Mike who operates a food cart that helps support him and his family.  In addition, he promotes SOR Mission and our ministry to the poor at every chance he gets.

What part can you play in helping world missions and helping others to find the treasure of knowing that God through Jesus Christ has forgiven all you sins if you accept his priceless sacrifice that he made for all of us.

Gracias.

We’re living in a crazy world. What can we do?

by SOR Mission on July 8, 2016

THate NOhere has been so much going on in the entire world lately that it causes us to wonder where love has gone. We see hate all around and people not wanting anyone to be different than they. Is this Gods design?

I believe that it’s not God’s plan and we at SOR Mission work daily to help those needing a hand up in life with a positive word, a visit to maternity, a single mom receiving a 0% interest micro enterprise loan through SOR or a family who are moving in soon to their new house with a 0% loan from SOR to help them build their self-worth and to provide for their family.

We can’t do it alone as we all live in a village and somehow we’re all connected.  Help us to spread love through ourHands united 2 (2) actions to the poor of Central America.  You can pray and share the love of Jesus where you live but if you can’t go like we have, you can donate a few dollars to SOR to help those who have no safety net or share the need with others.  The point is to get all of us out of our comfort zone and into areas that need love.  We are all agents of change.  The prophet Micah tells us so clearly from his prophecy in the Bible that states,

“O people, the Lord has told you what is good,
and this is what he requires of you:
to do what is right, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God”

The Art of Simplicity

by SOR Mission on July 3, 2016

Fourth of July fireworksFor those living in Canada on Canada Day, July 1st and those in the USA on their Independence Day on July 4th I say let’s always remember the cost of freedom and what it means to each one of us.  Let’s never forget as we see violence and hate around the world trying to cover the light of freedom and love we find in Jesus Christ.  We at SOR Mission work to help others find the joy, peace and freedom that comes from knowing Jesus Christ personally.

In taking my morning walk/run I have met some interesting people and also I have learnedGeraldo the Car Watcher more about the Costa Rican culture.  On my walking route yesterday  I stopped, like I do on many days, to greet my  friend “Gerald” who kind of guards the cars that park on the  street on  the city  block that he watches over.  Most people leave him a few Costa Rican “colones” for “watching over” their car while it was parked on the public street.

In meeting Gerald and getting to know him a bit I see contentment in him and it reminds me of the verse in the Bible that says, “I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am in.”  Philippians 4:11.  Is there a lesson for us to learn from this?  Do you have contentment in your life?  Let’s check out the article by clicking here for Today.  You might enjoy it.

The difference a few minutes can make.

by SOR Mission on June 21, 2016

woman conforts anotherShe said to me “I will never forget the day that I was admitted here and I was so very distressed because my baby had been born at just 34 weeks and was fighting for his life. I remember you came and sat next to my bed and read a scripture from the Bible that I will never forget”.

She then quoted Philippians 4: 6-7 to me which says “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

Sometimes we forget the power of insignificance.  We usually look for shock and awe or something big, powerfulHands united 2 (2) and awesome, but the contrary is many times true.  It’s those moments in time when we do an otherwise insignificant act of kindness to help our neighbor or the person by us who needs a helping hand.  This insignificant act can be quite significant to the recipient and me must never shy away from this kind of service to others.   In this way we truly find ourselves and who we really are.

As we’re told in Scripture in Philippians 2:3,Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”

~ Father’s Day 2016 ~

by SOR Mission on June 18, 2016

Fathers Day Sonora Smart DoddSunday, June 19th is Father’s Day in the USA but its also celebrated  in Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and Great Britain. In Honduras it’s celebrated on March 19th which is also Saint Joseph’s Day.

This day owes its beginning to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd (Feb 18, 1882 – March 22, 1978), who in 1909,  while living in Spokane, WA, USA.  Sonora Smart Dodd tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910.
It’s a day to visit our fathers or to recollect some thoughts and memories about our fathers.  Please go to our Today page where I have written an article in more depth about the day and my feelings concerning my earthly father and what I was able to learn from him.  By reading today’s post on Today you might just find some  encouragement for a  better Father’s Day.  Blessings to you!

Maria and her molar of faith

by SOR Mission on June 10, 2016

Maria de Costa Rica (2)I first met Maria through a Bible study that we started for six Catholic women who wanted to learn more about the Bible.  Maria and her husband have two boys and a little girl.

Maria was in the beginning very quiet and didn’t share much about what we were studying from the Bible but now some eight months later she is a very different person.  She laughs, reads the Bible and shares her feelings with the rest of the group.  One day recently she came to our Bible study with a very sad face.  All the other ladies in the group were concerned.

You can read the rest of the story under SOR Mission At Work/Justice under the drop down menu above.

Micah 6:8 instructs us by saying, “the Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.”

Mateo in doorway of nearly completed house #8 EditAt SOR Mission we live our mission statement daily in helping others.  We have been called to help connect human need with God’s resources.  In this case today, God’s resource just might be that next cup of coffee and sweet that you might want to enjoy.  Doing an act of kindness,  like giving the proceeds from that anticipated coffee you were going to buy,  to help a Central American family obtain a simple and affordable home is one act worth remembering.

This picture shows our nearly completed house #8 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. This house was built using about 2000 bricks in addition to the other materials needed to finish the house. This 420 square foot house will be home to a family without a home of their own. They will obtain a 0% interest loan and will enable them to purchase this affordable home.

Each brick, including a mason to install it costs about $0.25/brick and when I thought about that I realized if you IMG-20160412-WA0004had dropped by your local coffee shop today to have an iced Mocha Frappuccino with a low fat iced lemon pound cake you could have purchased 30 bricks for our next house.

You can do this significant act of kindness in helping a family yet unknown to you by clicking  on Support button on this page.  Your donation of $7.50  will purchase 30 bricks and the mason to install them with mortar and can you imagine what $20, $40 or more could do?  Remember we don’t need tons and tons of bricks but rather just 2000.  We’ll build this house with your kindness!
